Tour details:
Guided tour in one of the most important archaeological sites in Puglia. The tour will lead to the discovery of the ancient city of Egnazia (or Gnathia) inhabited by the indigenous populations of the Japigi, the Messapi, Greeks up to the Roman age.
You can admire the mighty defense walls and the necropolis.
From the Roman city, you can still see the remains of the Via Traiana way, the Civil Basilica with the hall of the Three Graces (kept in the museum), the oriental deities, the square with the arcades, the cryptoporticus and the Roman baths. Among the buildings of Christian worship, built between the fourth and sixth centuries d.C., you can admire the Episcopal Basilica with the baptistery and the Southern Basilica, originally paved with mosaics.
Later we will visit the national archaeological museum “Giuseppe Andreassi” built outside the walls of ancient Gnathia, in the area of the Messapian necropolis.
The museum, recently renovated, traces the thirty centuries of history of the important locality starting from the Bronze Age up to the Messapian and Roman cities, with the exceptional richness of the exhibits and panels with photos of the excavations of particular suggestion.
Above all, the marble head of the god Attis and the mosaic of the Graces stand out for their beauty.
