Tour details:
The San Fele waterfalls are formed along the course of the river Bradanello and then flow into the Fiumara di Atella and then into the Ofanto river. Upstream of the town of San Fele the stream proceeds with numerous waterfalls, locally called also “U uattenniere”, the dialect name of Gualchiera, a machine used in the past to fill wool using the power of water. There are also remains of ancient water mills, which ceased to function in the 30s of the twentieth century.
The milling machine was a machine used in ancient factories built close to the waterfalls that exploited the driving force of water to clear the wool. The felting properties of the cloth were thus made more compact and less rough.
The paths that lead to the San Fele Waterfalls are articulated along ancient mule tracks, which were used by those who lived in mountain locations to reach the village.
