Tour datails:
The Foresta Umbra nature reserve is a protected natural area, within the Gargano National Park. It extends in the central-eastern area of the Gargano, north of Puglia, at about 800 meters above sea level. The name “umbra” derives from the Latin: dark, shady, as it was then, and as in part today, it appears.
The naturalistic tour starts from the reserve of deer and seeks freely until you get to the “Cutino” d’Umbra, also called lake because it survives even in summer even though it is powered by no stream but only by rain. Extended to about one hectare and located in the heart of the Forest at 790 m.s.l.m., in the middle of a vast little Doline (kind of naturai ditches), the lake of Umbra has an elliptical shape (length 125 m, width 70) and a maximum depth of two meters.
In its waters swim various types of fish, turtles and toads. As it represents the main source of water for the local fauna, the Laghetto d’Umbra offers the opportunity to see a number of animals: fallow deer, wild cats, martens, badgers, dormice, martens, fox squirrels and a host of birds of prey.
The rout starts from the lake of Foresta Umbra, beautiful forest a small part of real Puglian forest survived, skirts the Muflone ranch and finishes in Falascone picnic area. Along the way you can see majestic beeches and yews.
The route will end with the return to the lake of Umbra. Great walking place
