Tour details:
Guided tour inside the historic center of Corigliano, a small town in Salento rich in history.
The tour begins with a visit to the 16th century mother church of St. Nicholas of Myra, famous for being venerated with its relics in the city of Bari. St. Nicholas is also the patron saint of this town. The tour continues with the external visit of Palazzo Comi in San Nicola square, in the mid-1700s.
Next we will visit the clock tower and the ancient portal known as Arco Lucchetti, built in 1497 by three monolithic elements in Lecce stone: a well-preserved lintel and two pillars in the lower half. The rich decoration of the portal occupies the front and the intrados of the arch entirely.
After having seen the arch, we will visit the symbol of Corigliano, the castle De ‘Monti, the most beautiful monument of military and feudal architecture of the beginning of the sixteenth century in Terra d’Otranto.
Of medieval origin, the castle was radically restructured and enlarged between 1514 and 1519. It is entirely surrounded by a moat and is built on a square plan, at the corners of which there are four large circular towers that defended the castle with the numerous gunboats on the various sides. In 1667 Duke Francesco Trane refined the austere military building by building a new front over the pre-existing with many statues accompanied by commemorative inscriptions and busts of the great leaders of the past.
